Cove Ceiling Designs: What They Are, How Much They Cost, and Where They Actually Work

Cove ceiling design with warm 2700K indirect LED lighting in a Bangalore living room

In This Article

A cove ceiling hides an LED strip inside a recessed ledge along the ceiling border and pushes light upward at the slab. The slab bounces it back down. What you get is ambient fill across the whole room with no visible source, no bright spot, nothing to accidentally look into. In Bangalore in 2026, gypsum with a cove runs Rs 95 to Rs 140 per sq ft including labour. The ledge needs at least 100mm depth, the LED needs a written Kelvin number in the scope before framing starts, and the cove needs its own dimmer, separate from the rest of the room.

Key Takeaways:

  • Cove ceiling — LED strip inside a recessed ledge, light bounces off the slab above, comes back down as sourceless ambient fill
  • Cove ledge under 100mm: you will see the LED strip from the sofa, not the wash
  • Gypsum with cove in Bangalore right now: Rs 95 to Rs 140 per sq ft. POP: Rs 70 to Rs 105
  • Ask your contractor for a Kelvin number on the spec sheet, not “warm white” — that phrase is unregulated and means different things across suppliers in this city
  • The cove is built into the false ceiling border. Not an alternative to one
  • Open kitchen with daily cooking plus a cove ceiling: a grease maintenance problem that gets worse every year

What Is a Cove Ceiling?

I will tell you what I tell homeowners who come in with a saved photo on their phone asking how to get that ceiling.

The photo usually shows a room where the ceiling appears to glow rather than reflect a fitting. No spot. No ring of light on the floor below a downlight. Just the whole upper portion of the room looking brighter than it should, softly, without a source. That is a cove ceiling — a recessed ledge built into the false ceiling border, an LED strip sitting inside it pointed at the slab, and the slab doing the actual work of spreading the light.

What it is not: a replacement for downlights. A cove lighting ceiling fills a room from the edges inward and removes the contrast between bright patches and dark gaps between furniture. Downlights put focused beams in specific spots. You need both for a room that actually functions. The cove handles the ambient layer; downlights or pendants handle the task and focal layers above that.

One thing worth knowing before we get to cost. Prestige and Brigade have been putting cove details in Whitefield and Sarjapur Road show flats for a few years now. That is not a design statement from a developer. That is a signal about maintenance. A clean gypsum cove border holds up over a decade better than ornate POP moulding. Less cracking. Less repainting. Less conversation when the flat resells.

How It Gets Built — and What Must Be Decided Before Framing

Gypsum or POP frame drops from the slab. Recessed ledge forms at the border. Aluminium LED profile goes inside the ledge — it holds the strip and manages heat, which matters because a strip running hot against gypsum shortens its own life. Interior face of the cove gets plastered and painted matte white. Not satin. Matte reflects the upward wash more evenly and the difference is visible once the ceiling is done.

Separate dimmer circuit for the cove. Own switch, own circuit, nothing shared with the downlights or the fan.

Now the part that goes wrong on most Bangalore projects.

Two things have to be locked in writing before a single gypsum panel goes up: the LED Kelvin number and the cove depth. Not agreed on site. In the document. Because contractors across Whitefield, Electronic City, and HSR Layout fit whatever LED strip came from the supplier that week, and whatever they call warm white on the delivery note may be 3000K or may be 4500K depending on who sent it. Once the gypsum is sealed, correcting the color temperature means opening the ceiling. Which means cost, dust, downtime, and a contractor who now has other jobs on.

Depth works the same way. The ledge needs 100mm from the front panel face to the back wall. At 100mm, the strip stays hidden from every seated position across the room. Below that, someone on your sofa sees individual LED dots. Not the wash. The strip itself. Manish Jain builds to 125mm as a standard on Bangalore projects because 100mm is correct in theory and occasionally insufficient on site when framing runs slightly shallow, which happens.

Also worth deciding before the electrician arrives: where does the LED driver go. The driver is the power supply, and it fails before the strip does — usually inside 12 to 18 months if it is running at full rated wattage continuously. A driver sealed behind gypsum means cutting the ceiling open to replace it. It needs to be in an accessible panel, not inside the ceiling volume.

Cove Ceiling vs POP False Ceiling

These are not alternatives and treating them as alternatives is where the confusion starts.

The POP or gypsum false ceiling is the structure: it drops from the slab, conceals AC ducting, wiring, utility runs, and gives you a ceiling plane you can finish and light. The cove is a ledge formed into the border of that same structure. You are not choosing between them. You are choosing whether the false ceiling border includes a cove ledge or not.

The cove vs POP false ceiling question matters most practically in apartments sitting at 9 to 9.5 feet of slab height, which covers a lot of the stock in Electronic City and older Bannerghatta Road buildings. Full ceiling drop works at 9 feet. Full drop plus a cove ledge dropping another 6 to 8 inches at the border in a compact bedroom is the version that starts feeling like a compression chamber, especially near the walls. In those rooms, a peripheral-only cove where only the border drops and the centre stays at slab height gives you the indirect light without the height penalty.

Which Rooms and Which Not

Living Room

This is where a cove ceiling makes the most consistent difference. Downlights in a living room create bright patches on the floor between furniture clusters, with darker gaps the eye keeps registering even when you are not looking for them. A perimeter cove fills the room from the ceiling edge inward and removes the patchwork. You still need a pendant or chandelier at the centre — the cove is doing ambient fill, not focal lighting — but together they produce a room that feels genuinely composed.

One structural thing specific to Brigade and Prestige 3BHK layouts in Whitefield and Sarjapur Road: there is almost always a beam running across the living room from the structural frame or from the kitchen slab above. That beam affects where the cove border runs continuously. Raise it in the design stage. Finding it after framing is up means making design decisions with a contractor standing there waiting. See our false ceiling designs for living rooms guide for how different ceiling types work around these constraints.

Master Bedroom

One wall. Behind the headboard. 2700K. Dimmer.

I specify this for most Bangalore master bedrooms because the two most common bedroom lighting failures in this city are a downlight directly above the bed you look into every time you lie down, and no overhead light at all so the bedside lamp is doing everything and leaving two-thirds of the room in shadow. The headboard wall cove at 2700K fixes both. Full brightness for reading. Dimmed to near-dark for sleeping. One switch.

No dimmer means one brightness level. A bedroom with one brightness level does not work.

Dining, Low-Ceiling Apartments, and What to Skip

Dining: rectangular cove framing the zone above, pendant 30 to 36 inches above the table. The cove and the pendant are doing different jobs. Neither substitutes for the other.

Low-ceiling apartments in Electronic City, Hebbal, older Bannerghatta Road stock: peripheral cove only — border drops, centre stays at slab height. Gets you the indirect ceiling light design without the compression.

Kitchen with open cooking: skip the cove entirely. The recessed ledge accumulates grease and oil vapour from cooking. After a couple of years it is difficult to access and progressively harder to clean without damaging the surrounding gypsum. Under-cabinet LEDs below your upper cabinets give better task light with zero maintenance problem.

What It Costs in Bangalore (2026)

ComponentCost Range
Gypsum false ceiling with coveRs 95 to Rs 140 per sq ft
POP false ceiling with coveRs 70 to Rs 105 per sq ft
LED stripRs 35 to Rs 65 per running foot
Aluminium LED profileRs 20 to Rs 40 per running foot
LED driverRs 800 to Rs 2,500 per unit
Dimmer switchRs 600 to Rs 2,200 per circuit

A 15 by 12 foot living room in gypsum with cove and LED: Rs 38,000 to Rs 72,000 in Bangalore right now, materials and labour together. POP in the same room runs Rs 28,000 to Rs 55,000. Labour in Koramangala and Indiranagar tends to run 10 to 15% above Electronic City and Hebbal rates for the same ceiling scope.

Most contractor quotes split the ceiling and the LED strip as two separate line items. Get both before signing. A ceiling rate per square foot without the LED cost is not a useful number.

The Color Temperature Mistake Most Contractors Make

The Kelvin number is the decision that changes how a finished cove ceiling feels more than anything else in the specification, and it is the one routinely left to whatever the supplier sent that week.

Living rooms: 2700K to 3000K. Above 4000K a living room starts reading as a commercial space regardless of what the furniture looks like. Bedrooms: 2700K, because anything cooler works against you from about 9pm onward. Dining areas: 2700K to 3000K, food looks wrong under cool light. Home office: 4000K with a dimmer for the evening. If you want to understand how light colour temperature interacts with wall paint colours before finalising your ceiling spec, Asian Paints covers the relationship between light temperature and paint undertones in their light and colour guide — worth reading before your painter and electrician show up on the same week.

The supplier problem in Bangalore is worth spelling out. “Warm white” and “natural white” are marketing labels, not technical specifications, and they are not standardised across suppliers. A supplier in HSR Layout and a supplier in Rajajinagar may both write “warm white” on the delivery note for LEDs that measure 3000K and 4500K respectively. The only thing that protects you is a Kelvin number written into your scope document before work starts, plus a request for the product specification sheet of the exact item being supplied. Not after installation. Before.

Three Things That Wreck a Cove Ceiling

Depth under 100mm. From across the room you will see individual LED dots, not a wash. Once the ceiling is sealed this cannot be corrected without demolishing the cove section. The number goes in the scope document before framing starts. 125mm if you want a real buffer.

No dimmer circuit. Contractors default to a standard switch because it is faster. What you get is one brightness level. That is fine for a corridor. A living room or bedroom needs a range. Specify a separate dimmer per cove circuit before the electrician wires anything.

Mismatched Kelvin across the room. A cove at 3000K next to downlights at 5000K makes the room feel off in a way nobody can quite identify but everyone registers. Check every fitting in a room together against the same Kelvin range before any installation begins.

FAQs

What is the minimum slab height for a cove ceiling?

9.5 feet before any framing starts. Standard cove drops 6 to 8 inches at the border. Multi-level ceiling designs need 10 to 12 inches. Apartments at 9 feet, which is common in Electronic City and older Bannerghatta Road developments, should run a peripheral-only cove — border drops, centre stays at full slab height — rather than a full room drop with a cove border on top.

How long does the LED strip last inside a sealed ceiling?

The strip itself: 50,000 to 60,000 hours, which at 8 hours daily is 17 to 20 years before it needs replacing. The driver fails first. Size it 20% above the strip’s rated wattage draw and put it somewhere accessible without cutting the ceiling open. That is the whole maintenance story for a well-specified cove installation.

What if I want the indirect light effect but cannot build a false ceiling?

PU foam crown moulding at the ceiling-wall junction with an LED strip tucked behind it. Roughly Rs 15 to Rs 25 per running foot with the strip included. Not the same result as a purpose-built cove but it produces indirect wash without structural work or a ceiling drop. Works in a rental.

Ceiling fan and cove ceiling — do they work together?

Yes. Circular gypsum ring around the fan mount, cove runs along the outer edge of the ring, fan drops from the centre. The ring extends at least 12 inches past the blade span on each side. The fan becomes part of the ceiling design rather than something sitting awkwardly in the middle of it.

Should the inside of the cove be white or match the ceiling colour?

Matte white, always. The interior face of the cove is a reflector. Any other colour shifts the apparent Kelvin of the reflected light in ways that are nearly impossible to predict until the ceiling is sealed and the light is on.

One Thing Your Contractor Will Not Bring Up

Before the frame goes up, you need four decisions in writing: cove depth, Kelvin number, driver location, dimmer per zone.

Your contractor will not raise any of them. Not because they are being difficult — because the defaults are cheaper and faster and nobody has asked them to do otherwise. This is the briefing gap that turns a cove ceiling into the wrong color on a single switch with a strip visible from the sofa.

If you want the ceiling done right from the first frame, the Blue Interiors living room design service covers this as part of a full interior scope. Or reach us directly and we will walk through what your specific slab height and apartment layout actually allows.
